House on Wheels
This is a little wooden house on wheels I made in 2003. Inside it is a story on a scroll which turns by means of cogs underneath attached to the wheels. The story (which I wrote and calligraphed too) is a rather whimsical sort of socialist folktale about imbalances of power, and you can read it through the windows as you push the house along. (It's written in a spiral so that it continues as the house moves.)
This was a kind of prototype... The cogs are clunky and don't always meet, and I would make them a little less rustic next time! And the scroll has suffered with age too.
It has travelled with me for years on shelves of studio or moving house, gathering dust from different places, and I'm very fond of it. It reminds me that stories and wheeled houses have always been fundamental to my creative (and real!) life, and that putting them together creates a wonderful magic.
