THIS PAINTED EARTH

A 5-day course in soulful art-making & paint-making with Rima Staines & Caroline Ross

Outline:

Together, internationally-known artist and Devon resident Rima Staines and bestselling artist and author Caroline Ross (Found and Ground) have devised a 5-day journey in drawing and painting with natural materials from first principles to final painted piece. We’ll explore charcoal, pencil, natural paints and finally work on a wooden roundel, a speciality of Rima's, using repurposed bread boards, helping you grow in confidence and explore the mythic and imaginal realms through your art over our time together.

Both of them have backgrounds in detailed observational drawing and long to bring some technical rigour into self-expression. Between them they have many decades of experience as successful working artists.

Starting on the first day with learning how to make and use natural charcoal, we'll draw from a huge, beautiful still life set up. We’ll make charcoal in a bonfire, tell folktales and dig deeper into the impetus to draw and to paint.

The next day we'll make pigments from mostly local earths and rocks and learn how to turn them into watercolour paints, then use them to paint from the human body (either from a model, from ourselves or from each other). We'll explore where the urge to draw and paint comes from, and how we can align our art and our souls with Earth.

Wednesday and Thursday will be spent devising and creating our paintings on wood with either tempera (egg paint) which Caroline will teach, or with water-based ‘oil paints’, a regular choice of Rima’s. From preparing the surface, drawing the subjects and making the paintings, all with natural materials and one-to-one help and advice on hand, the participants will create their unique paintings home with them, and the knowledge of how to make personal, powerful art that has ecological and social integrity. Friday will be spent completing our final pieces and rounding off the course by sharing what we’ve learned and made.

With a wealth of books, materials, art, experience and inspiration to draw on and share during the week, plus the deep pleasure and joy of working alongside kindred folk, we will uncover wonderful forgotten practices and approaches which can revitalise our artistic lives.

This unique course is suitable for practising artists of any level, whether professional, part time, amateur or returning after time away from creativity. We’ll help create a warm, supportive atmosphere where you’ll be expected to dive into the exercises and opportunities on offer. So, if you haven’t drawn or painted for a while, but would love to come along, get yourself back into working in a sketchbook in the meantime, to reconnect the hand, eye, mind and heart.

All you need to bring are an apron or clothes you’d usually wear to make your art, plus a large hardback spiral or easy to keep open sketchbook (A3 is ideal). If you like to work on a drawing board, feel free to bring a small one, but it’s not essential. A pencil case of your favourite pens, pencils and brushes would also be handy, and a notebook for written notes. After the course, a tailor-made pdf for your own personal continued study will be sent out complete with art materials-recipes, links, bibliography and any other relevant information that comes up during the course.

Rima and Caroline will have books and prints for sale as well as a cornucopia of their art, craft and materials to share with you. We are excited to welcome you to Devon for the debut outing of this new rich and inspirational course.
